Binary stopping theory for swift heavy ions

WebBinary stopping theory, although developed to describe heavy-ion stopping, has a potential in light-ion stopping which is examined in this paper. We study antiprotons, hydrogen and helium ions penetrating through elemental materials and lithium fluoride. WebWe report some highlights of our work with heavy-ion stopping in the energy range where Bethe stopping theory breaks down. Main tools are our binary stopping theory (PASS code), the reci-procity principle, and Paul’s data base. Comparisons are made between PASS and three al-ternative theoretical schemes (CasP, HISTOP and SLPA).

WebSwift heavy ions are the components of a type of particle beam with high enough energy that electronic stopping dominates over nuclear stopping. [1] [2] They are accelerated in particle accelerators to very high energies, typically in the MeV or GeV range and have sufficient energy and mass to penetrate solids on a straight line. The point-like model is reviewed and compared to a new theory which includes the projectile elastic form factor. It is shown that, even for highly ionized ions, the projectile form factor yields a substantial modification over the standard stopping results.
